My Story

In case you haven’t heard of it, Instagram is a social media app where you post photos and videos of yourself, your friends and the world. Your photo is collated by others into an “Instalike” rating. People can comment on your Instalikes, providing useful feedback that can help inform your decisions in terms of future photo selection (for example, people will tell you what they like or dislike about what you are posting).

You can also earn money by commenting on other people’s photos. For the past couple of years I have been running a blog called “500 Instagram Followers Thank You” (500 for short) where I am posting my best pictures to help people see how beautiful life can be. It has been enormously popular: getting over 5,000 unique visitors every week! But I wasn’t thinking about how much money I was making — it just seemed like a fun way to meet new people and share the beauty of life. So when 500 instagram followers thank you started doing well with over 4,000 likes a day and suddenly hit 6,000 likes a day I thought this was a sign from above that it was time to look at what might be going wrong with my business model — as well as thinking about how to make it work better in the future.

The benefits of having instagram followers

Why not join the 500 instagram followers thank you group? A quick perusal of the group’s blog shows that they are very aware of the fact that some of their members are motivated more by vanity than social media. They realize that some people don’t care that much about following weird accounts like yours.

If you want to get more followers, try a query like: “What do 500 followers do for me?” or “What is the benefit 500 followers provide?” You will get a lot better results.

My plans for further development of my instagram account

500 instagram followers thank you is a somewhat tongue-in-cheek reference to the 500 followers I had on Instagram, but more importantly it’s a way of describing a basic “how to” for any business that wants to get started with social media.

The idea of the “how to” is not really new (although its application in marketing has certainly been limited), but the approach I have taken with it is. It has three main elements:

• Develop a following – and then grow it

• Work out what you need to do and when you need to do it

• Plan accordingly

For most businesses, getting started on social media means acquiring a couple thousand followers. While this may seem like an impossible feat, every startup can learn from what has worked for others and apply that learning to their own situation. This is basically the whole point of this blog post; anyone who plans on getting anywhere in social media should read this post before doing anything else.

I’m going to outline how I did this in two distinct parts: first, setting up my account and then defining how I want this account to evolve over time. The goal here is not just setting up your account or growing your followers — these are part of the process, but they are very much secondary goals at this point (and even though they are very important factors in setting up your account, they are not really part of the “how to”). The real focus here is on growing your audience — which isn’t something you can do just by having 1000 people follow you on Twitter or 1 million people like your Facebook page; you need more than that if you want to reach 1 million people (which we will cover later). And once your audience starts growing, there are other things at play besides just having 1 million followers — such as using Social Media as marketing tool (which we will cover in part 3). So the ultimate goal here should be growth. But if one person follows or likes 100 people or follows 100 people, that’s very good and all that matters for now; it doesn’t matter if all those 100 people follow each other or not, etc., as long as each one knows about each other and/or likes each other. That is also why our “how to” focuses less on building an audience than growing an audience individually. In fact, we decided against defining individual followers because
