Welcome back to my blog, today I’m reviewing the Isle of Paradise Self Tanning Drops in Medium and Dark. Self-tan drops are becoming so popular for their customization and ease of use. Gone are the days when you have to buy a tanning mousse or self tan lotion and hope it’ll be the right shade.
Self tanning drops also provide an enhanced tanning experience especially if you have sensitive skin. Mousse and lotion formulas aren’t necessarily something you want to apply on the face. Do you use your body cream all over your face too? Probably not.

ISLE OF PARADISE SELF TANNING DROPS
These drops are $38CAD for 30ml or 1oz of product. They came in an easy to use dropper bottle and are available in Light, Medium and Dark. The label states “apply 2-12 drops”, but this is quite ambiguous and for first timers it may be confusing to know just how much to use. These drops can be used all over the body, but personally I prefer them just for the face and opt for a mousse all over my body.
In case you haven’t heard of this brand yet, Isle of Paradise is a vegan and cruelty-free clean beauty self tanning brand. You can buy their products at Sephora! They are a newer brand and have only been at Sephora for a couple of years now.
The fact this product is a clean beauty brand is appealing since I know less chemicals will have to touch my face in order to achieve a glow. God knows how many chemicals I ingest daily with my regular skincare products.
HOW TO APPLY SELF TANNING DROPS
Be careful not to apply these directly on the skin with no moisturizer as they can be quite potent. Self-tanning drops need a carrier agent to blend most effectively and give you an even finish.
To avoid getting too much product on my hands, I literally just apply these self-tan drops with the dropper dispenser in areas where I have already added dashes moisturizer.
For the face: I typically use 2-3 drops and do 3 globs of moisturizer. One dash on the forehead and two on each check. Then I mix with my fingertips and blend in.
For the body: I apply 3 drops per arm and 5-6 drops on each leg, if I do use them for the body. For the mid section and back, 4 drops for chest and stomach and 4 drops for the back on top of a glob of lotion.
Note: I personally never use a tanning mitt as I don’t want these drops to be soaked up by the mitt. I just wash my hands after use and if I do add them to my hands, I’ll use some micellar water on a cotton round to get them off my palms.
WHAT I THINK OF THIS PRODUCT
-The Isle of Paradise Self Tanning Drops are extremely easy to use.
-It’s nice to customize the amount of tan I will get beyond just buying a ‘medium’ or ‘dark’ product.
-The dark drops are much quicker if you want tan on your face. I don’t need to apply the dark multiple days in a row to get the glow I want.
-They tend to last at least 4 months if I am using them regularly just on my face.
-The self-tan drops blend easily with all of my moisturizers.
-These are “Clean Skincare” stamped at Sephora
-I have travelled with these for several months and not once have they ever leaked on me.
-I don’t recommend blending these self-tanning drops with oil-based skincare as they may look streaky (this happened to me blending with face oil).
-I would never personally buy the ‘light’ drops because sometimes the ‘medium’ shade is even too light for me (and I have lighter skin).
-They smell like nothing but will develop a typical “tanning smell” after they develop within 3-4 hours. This goes away when you wash your face.
-They are a bit expensive.
HOW LONG DO ISLE OF PARADISE SELF-TANNING DROPS LAST?
I find that these will last on my face for about 3 days. When I am using exfoliating acids in my skincare routine, I find I do have to reapply drops the next day after exfoliating. This is totally normal and exfoliating will break down your tan faster.
WHAT IS THE FORMULA AND TANNING SHADE LIKE?
These self-tanning drops are like a liquid with a dash of gel, so you’ll want to apply them just before you mix them with your moisturizer, so they don’t drip everywhere.
The Isle of Paradise Self-Tanning Drops provide a lovely golden glow to the skin. I’ve tried at least a dozen tanning products and these are one of the more natural shades I’ve found, especially for the face. You won’t find they make you turn orange or have an add green-looking undertone like some of the poor quality tanning products.
IS THERE A GUIDE COLOUR?
No. These drops are translucent and you won’t have a temporary colour develop to show you where you have applied them. This is another reason I prefer to use a regular tanning mousse for the body, so I can see if I have missed larger areas. For the face, this isn’t as much of a concern.
Note: I do love the fact there is no guide colour especially for the face. I can apply these before my makeup and won’t have to worry about guide colour undertones changing how my makeup looks. It is nice to wash off my makeup at the end of the day and have more of a glow to the face! Who doesn’t love still feeling pretty even without makeup on?
OVERALL THOUGHTS ON THESE DROPS
4.5/5. I deducted half a point because they looked streaky on my forehead when I tried to use them with a facial oil and the smell is a bit strong when they develop.
I really enjoy using these and they have given me a much more natural looking self-tan on the face than mousses previously were. Also, when I have dry patches and texture on my face, these drops don’t enhance that like a traditional tanning mousse would.
Overall, the Isle of Paradise Self-Tanning Drops are a solid product to consider adding to your routine, especially if you are looking for a great self-tan for the face. Bonus that they are cruelty-free, vegan and a clean skincare product. Get them here.
