So lately I’ve been thinking about how a lot of us do use quite a few products to create a look, even on ‘no makeup’ makeup days. Are these products necessary or have we simply bought into marketing? Do we really need to prime our eyes and faces and then set everything with additional products? Today I’m sharing my experience of an entire day with full makeup, but no primer or setting powder or setting spray was used! (The photo below shows my regular arsenal)
The day was November 1st, the day after Halloween, so naturally I was hungover. I had stayed over at a friends house and brought all the makeup I needed except anything to prime or set my makeup. I had to go to work and thought potentially crappy makeup was probably better than no makeup so I did a full face (BB creme, concealer, powder foundation, eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, brows, contour).
WITHIN 5 MINUTES:
Under eye creasing was real and immediate
WITHIN 1 HOUR:
My eyeshadow had started creasing.
WITHIN 4 HOURS:
My under eye concealer was starting to come off from me trying to separate the creasing, and eyelids were looking worse
AFTER 10 HOURS:
-My under eye concealer was practically gone from trying to de-crease
-My eyelids resembled how they looked in high school when I hadn’t discovered primer
-My contour was seriously faded which was super disappointing
-The overall coverage of my foundation was okay but overall diminished.
Do we need eyeshadow primer?
Yes. No matter how high end the product, anatomy is the reason you will get creasing!
Do we need face primer?
Not always. I do find my makeup has a nice base with primer, but a heavy moisturizer can also act as a primer because it gives your skin an emollient base.
Do we need setting powder?
For under eyes 100% yes!! But for the rest of the face I’d say it really depends on your skin type and if you also use a setting spray. I only use setting powder when I use liquid foundation.
Do we need setting spray?
We don’t need it. But I do find setting spray works and prolongs your makeup. I always use it if I know I have a full day ahead of me and want my makeup to last! It’s amazing to see my makeup looking great sometimes 14 hours later.
Let me know your thoughts on setting and priming 🙂
